There's more to being a successful DJ than just spinning the tunes on your decks, you need to market yourself.
Being a #DJ and running a business are two separate things that require different skill sets.
Years ago marketing typically involved getting your details listed in the Yellow Pages and posting an advert in the local paper. But times have moved on and in the digital era there's a much greater focus on social media and websites.
One of the best way to market your business is to let your customers recommend you, word of mouth (even in the digital form) will likely encourage more people to book you than generic adverts. You can encourage your clients to do this but there's only so much control you have over this.
It's good to focus on what you can control; your own website and social media. It's important for you to consider what is required and publish content regularly. If your potential clients visit your Facebook page and you haven't published anything recently, it could deter potential clients. After all, they don't know if your still.in business or they could think that you can't be good if you haven't done any events recently.
A website doesn't need to be a lot of hard work; a simple one page website is better than nothing. It's best to have something than nothing. As a minimum, it's good for a website to contain your contact details, information about what you provide and some pictures.
One thing that some people overlook is their email address. Given a domain costs under £10 a year, it is well worth having an email address using your domain than having a generic email provider. If you can spend thousands on your equipment why not spend a relatively small amount on making your company look professional?
Social media can feel like a minefield and overwhelming if you're not used to it. Rather than trying to be on as many platforms as possible, it's better to focus your efforts where it'll be most effective; where your target audience will be. Typically, most DJs tend to use Facebook and Instagram with some also using TikTok.
Facebook and Instagram have the advantage that you can post to both at the same time using Business Suite, saving time posting separately to both. There are tools out there that will allow you to post to multiple social media platforms although these tend to cost money or are limited in their use for free accounts.
If you're posting a lot of videos, TikTok and YouTube might also be beneficial to use.
With all social media, it's worth researching the best hashtags to use. Advice from experts varies on the best number of hashtags to use, but the general consensus seems to be not to use too many (over 6) and therefore it's better to really target the hashtags that'll be most popular for the content you're publishing and the target audience you're trying to reach.
It's also worth considering adding yourself to directories.
As well as the free stuff mentioned here, it's also worth considering whether any paid adverts would be worthwhile.
